Overview
This project consists of sculptural pieces inspired by Wim Crouwel’s typeface Gridnik, reimagined through the lens of modernist furniture and design. The work explores the intersection of typography and sculpture, drawing on architectural balance, spatial tension, and structural clarity. These forms merge typographic precision with three-dimensional visual language to create bold yet refined objects.
Approach
Using the 45-degree angles characteristic of Gridnik, the sculptures emulate the sharp geometric folds of origami. Inspired by Gerrit Rietveld, one of Crouwel’s key influences, the pieces reinterpret typographic forms as physical structures. A series of origami templates were developed and unfolded to guide metal sheet folding, resulting in sculptural works that balance design and materiality. Photography of the sculptures was translated into graphic prints and a motion graphic, paired with ambient sound to enhance the sensory experience.
