Overview
This poster and accompanying publication pay tribute to India’s fading craft of sign painting, celebrating the stories, techniques, and lived experiences of its artisans. By weaving together anecdotes and cultural context, the project creates a layered narrative that reveals both the beauty and the struggles behind this traditional art form. It serves not only as a documentation but also as a heartfelt call to preserve a craft that now stands on the brink of disappearance; a salute to the hands that have preserved its soul in every painted letter and line.
Approach
The visual identity combines screen-printed posters and a small risograph-printed book, both designed with a two-color palette of green and orange, symbolic of India’s national identity. The typography juxtaposes the rigid forms of English with the fluid expressiveness of Devanagari, creating a dialogue between scripts that reflects the cultural duality of the craft. The publication was bound using a French link stitch with a hard cover, reinforcing the tactile, handmade essence of the work. Both poster and book emerged through extensive exploration and trials, ensuring authenticity and sensitivity to the tradition they honor.
